Governor Approves Expansion of Medi-Cal to All Children in California
On October 9, 2015, Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) into law. SB 4 will extend full scope Medi-Cal coverage to low-income undocumented immigrant children up to 18 years of age starting in May 2016.
Experts anticipate that the new law will expand coverage to more than 170,000 children in California.
The state, along with a robust network of advocacy groups, are working to roll out campaigns to educate and enroll as many eligible children as soon as possible. California’s school districts, often the first place low-income children encounter health care, will be a primary partner in executing this law and bringing coverage to their undocumented students.
More information can be found on the DHCS Website dedicated to implementing the new law (note: SB 4 was previously included in health bill SB 75; some resources, like the state’s website, still refer to the law under this alternative bill number).
